It seems like having a bachelor’s degree in today’s world is simply not enough for you land a decent job or gain a promotion. Maybe you’ve been considering taking additional courses to obtain more skills and make your resume look better, but don’t necessarily want to go for your master’s just yet. There are other ways besides a masters to do that. Here is a list of courses you could take to help further your career:
- CPR/First Aid – This is a very vital skill set to know that most aren’t trained in. It is good to know that you will be able to help in an emergency.
- Language – Knowing a second language makes you more valuable. In the U.S., Spanish is the unofficial second language. It could be useful both personally and professionally. Also, look into what other countries your company does business with and consider learning a language from one of those regions.
- Software – Many companies have specific software systems they utilize in their daily operations. Take a course on one of these software programs to give you a boost.
- Microsoft – What company doesn’t use Microsoft? You may know a little bit on Microsoft Office, but it can’t heart to be a master at using Excel or PowerPoint.
- Certified Practitioner – Various positions in a company have more recognition if you become a certified practitioner. For example a production supervisor can get their CPIM certification, which states they are knowledgeable, experienced, and tested in that area. Note that most of these certifications do require a regular update and proof of practice to maintain the certification status.
- Public Speaking – This is an area most are not comfortable in. However, you will be required from time to time to speak in front of an audience. If you want to become a leader, it is something you will have to do regularly.
- Marketing – Marketing is one of the important functions of a company. It’s not a bad idea to know a little bit about this area and understand the process.
- Graphic Design – With the use of social media and other marketing tools becoming more common. Graphic design is a great area to know a little about. It will help you work in cohesion with other departments and develop a more creative mindset.
- Manager – Knowing how to manage employees, schedules, budgets, and projects is crucial to the success of a company. It will teach you leadership skills and will assist in obtaining a position in a similar area.
A lot of community colleges offer courses like the ones above where you can become certified in those areas. Most don’t require you to go to school for years to obtain them and it is something you can do in your spare time. Another plus side is that there is no need to go to a university to gain these certifications. If you are interested, take some time to research your surrounding colleges and decide what you would like to do.
