Create an Impressive Cover Letter & Land an Interview. Job hunting can be so stressful, which is why it’s crucial to write a phenomenal cover letter. I used to think that cover letters were pointless, but then I learned that they are literally your first impression of these hiring companies. That changed my whole perspective. Writing a cover letter isn’t easy because it requires some thought and insight into that company. Here are some pointers that could help you write a cover letter that makes you stand out in a crowd.

Have an interesting introduction

You want to hook the reader into continuing to read further. Be sure that you capture your audience with a creative introduction. Telling a story, making a statement, expressing your passion are all good ways to start a cover letter.

Highlight your skills and accomplishments

This is your time to shine. A resume just lists your experience and education. A cover letter allows you to dive deeper into that and share with others what your resume can’t. Use this as an opportunity to pitch yourself to the company.

Explain why you would be a great addition to the company

Obviously, a company wants to know why your skills and personality will mesh well with their team. They also want you to be more specific with how you could use those traits to benefit the company. For example: If you work in marketing, have a marketing strategy prepared specifically for the company you’re sending the cover letter and resume to. Basically, have an idea to solve their problem.

Showcase your knowledge of the company

Take some time to research the company. Learn what they do, their mission statement, their performance in their field, etc. Weave some of the information you gathered into your cover letter. This will also be useful for when you actually get an interview too!

Show gratitude for the time

As always, let the audience know how you appreciate them taking time out of their day to read your application and considering you for the position. I don’t know a person alive who doesn’t like to be thanked.

Include contact information

Don’t forget to add your contact information to the cover letter. It’s also not a bad idea to suggest a meeting to discuss it further. Doing this puts that idea into their head and they may consider taking you up on that offer.

When you feel you have finished writing your cover letter, be sure to re-read it for any mistakes, add the salutations and signature, and have a unique format. Also, try to avoid using overused phrases or words. Try saying the same message, but in a different way. When you have done all of this, feel free to send it off. Best of wishes on your journey.
